Edinbane Festival 2003 (Friday 4th and Saturday 5th July)
PROGRAM FRIDAY 4 July 5.30 - 9.30pmFestival Club - Open stage & Café Join us at 5.30 in our village hall to gather and share the craic. Don't miss the start of the open stage & local talent who will get us worked up to tempo. BYOB 6.00 - 7.00pm Opening Parade Paper & Withy Sculptures, Bali Banners, Mad Hatters Join the parade - See what this year's young creators have come up with. The Dunvegan Pipe band leaves from the Club, to join the procession of banners and paper sculptures that will parade through the village to the main venue in time for the opening gig and earlybird drams. FRIDAY NIGHT - Marshall Centre Ticket Prices £12 each night on the door (Under 12s free) Free entry to festival club 7.30pm Tension Local youth band, itching to get on stage and strut their stuff. Mixing trad melodies with rock riffs, piper Neal Beaton, Ruaraidh Keel,Thomas Butler, Fiona MacKaskill, David Cumming & Ian Matheson will show us what they're made of. 8.00pm - Edinbanter Featuring Robin Laing, Billy Stewart & Aonghas MacNeacail. They entertain with songs, stories & poems, gathered from their work in the community in a unique project which explores the past, present and future of young & old in this village. Showcase Winners from the Ceilidh held in June and chosen by that audience will perform during this slot and throughout the festival. 9.30 - 10.30pm Plaid Oot Ceilidh Band This five-piece ceilidh band has been together for about two years. They kick off a mini Highland tour at Edinbane. With members from Skye to Dumfries they play an exciting set of traditional tunes. Fiddle, mandolin, guitar and bass are backed by a full drum kit. Their lively arrangements and caller ensure that you won't sit still for long 10.30 - 11.30pm Farquhar MacDonald and "WHO" ? He never fails to keep us guessing. In a previous incarnation, along with Archie MacFarlane, it was these Local Boys' great CD, whose launch played no small part in the idea of bringing a festival to Edinbane. This gig could see the launch of a big new band for Skye! 12.00 - 1.30am Croft No. Five In 2002 Croft No 5 made such an impression that the youth of Edinbane demanded their return this year. Hailing from the Highlands, this band is on the hunt for success. With an upbeat sound consisting of fiddle, whistle, accordion with guitar,bass and drums, they take tunes and turn them on their heads. Croft No Five are intent on driving Scotland'smusic forward. Combining original melodies with dance and funk grooves they create a high energy mix, ideal for the dance floor. 1.30 -3.30am Open Session at the Festival Club BYOB

BYOB 11.00am - 5.00pm Workshops and more for all ages (around the village) Storytelling - led by Helen Danter Modelling workshop - Linda MacCann TBC T Shirt painting - Mandy Darling a frequent visitor to the village Paint Paint Paint - a big picture with local artist David MacPhee Throw a Pot - at the pottery between 2.00 PM & 4.00 PM Pony rides, face painting and funky hair-doos between 3.00 PM - 5.00 PM During the afternoon - various stalls & Falconry 3.00 - 5.00pmLive recording of Edinbanter CD Songs, stories & poems produced with the community in May 2003 will be recorded to produce a snapshot of Edinbane. Featuring Robin Laing, Billy Stewart Aonghas MacNeacail & local talent. Order your hot off the press copy at the Festival Club. A limited number will be available on Sunday at the hotel. SATURDAY NIGHT - Marshall Centre Ticket Prices £12 each night on the door (Under 12s free) Free entry to festival club 7.30pm Stonefield Don't be fooled - this new young band is brimming with musicians who have been making music for probably as long as they can remember. While still at school Alastair Connor was flown to London to pipe for Prince Charles and Nelson Mandela, at the Albert Hall. More Showcase Winners from the Ceilidh held in June and chosen by that audience will perform during this slot and later in the evening 8.45pm Skirler Four Peatbog Faeries and Famous Shameless Seumas... Peter, tell me about Skirler? "We'll we play energetic Celtic tunes and song and some pop...call us the Beatles if you want." 10.00 - 11.30pm Les Misères This band is becoming well known in the district but this is their first gig in the North end. They bring the sizzling Cajun sounds of Louisiana to Scotland. Their mission is to marry the hip-shaking grove of Zydeco music to haunting traditional Cajun melodies. Audiences have been packing dance floors and swinging out to their two steps, waltzes & Creole blues. 12.00 -1.30am Shooglenifty "One name in particular was attracting delirious outpourings; it was a good bet that they were going to be THE band of the festival. And so it was that Shooglenifty came and conquered with the most exhilarating concoction of the decade - Acid Croft." SUNDAY 6 July AfternoonMartin & Swan (Edinbane Hotel) Pam Swan - superb traditional backing pianist (Alasdair Fraser et al) comes over from the USA to accompany Ronan Martin, undoubtedly one of the most tasteful fiddle players in Skye and Scotland, for a one-off performance. A lovely mellow wind down to the 3rd Edinbane Festival
